Study, large, surface too firm for older cat?

My cat's a "hider." He loves warm protected places to curl up and sleep. It's sturdy and well-made. My kitty, while he sat on the top right away, took a good month to ever sleep inside. I think I need to put in something softer (maybe some fleece) because he's older and didn't stay long.
